Color choices - help me decide

Ready for the final color and then this large Platter will be fired in the kiln

I'm trying to decide . . . should I leave the background white? Should I add a little color? And what about a border?

Should the background be blue, or what about yellow? What do you think? I would love to know.

  1. Wish I could do work like that....if I could, I would paint a blue border around the edge of the plate, and leave the rest of the background white. If you were to paint a background color, would you paint around the design carefully, or would you use wax resist and a large brush to apply the color overall the plate?
Wonderful artistry, I love your blog and your work.

  2. Hi Marla,
I like your idea. I think that the plate definitely needs a border and blue is a good choice.
I only use wax resist when I want to deliberately antique my ceramics. . . and I do that quite often. In the above design, blocking out would take up as much time as painting background around the design. So yes, I would paint around the design carefully.
Thank you for visiting my blog. I noticed that you also paint in the maiolica style. And I also like YOUR work.

  3. Hi Gina, How gorgeous this is! My two cents is yes on a border and yes on white background. Maybe a two toned border? Can't wait to see what you do. Thank you as always for your lovely visits and comments. Don't pull up stakes! You have your own unique paradise and what's more, you've created yourself, and to a jaw-dropping result. I think it's marvelous! xo – g

  4. Yep...blue border...maybe repeat the della robia design, leaves with the orange fruit and a ribbon intertwined

  5. Dear Georgianna, No, I'm not going to pull up stakes. I only get a little jealous when I see your incredible photographs of flowers.
I want it all. We had 4 inches of snow yesterday. The apricots have frozen again, for the 4th year in a row.
I have added borders to my plate, great idea you had, it looks good so far.

  6. Dear Theresa, Thank you for your input. I have always loved the Della Robbia design and have used it in my ceramics on several occasions and in several different versions.
I'm so glad that I asked for your opinions, it is giving me a few new and good ideas.
