Dear Val, I believe this is more fun for me than anyone. Val, I love all of your answers. The runner line for squirrels is my favorite. It shows that you love animals and nature...which I knew already. Thank you for joining the fun.

DeleteIt's either an Alfalfa lick for squirrels, or an Alfalfa hiding place for them to 'squirrel away' their acorns - LOL!!!

DeleteThis is my second attempt to publish my answer. I hope it doesn't show up twice. I think we are looking at a metal fence against which either horses or cattle have rubbed. The reddish mass we see is the compilation of the hair that the animals have rubbed off. mccannx5@hotmail.com

DeleteHaving grown up in a city (even though a smaller one!) I haven't seen anything like that and even though others have come up with some very interesting possibilities, all I can suggest is: it is a covering of a metal chain that would prevent injuries to animals that might be prone to rub up next to it??? Too bad that's all I can come up with - your jams look and I'm sure are the sweetest-tasting around - not to mention those very beautiful labels! Thanks for the offer - wish I could be more creative in my answer...
