Do you know how to keep waffles crisp?



Whenever my little nieces come for a visit


We have to have waffles for breakfast. 

Waffles because I have a waffle iron which makes individual hearts. 





The little girls told me that they always toast their ready made frozen waffles when they are at home.  




I showed my nieces how to make pancake and waffle batter from scratch.  It only takes a few minutes to mix the simple ingredients. 






Even though my pancakes are crisp when they first come from the waffle iron, they soon lose their texture.  Keeping them seperate doesn't help either. 





So why not make a big batch, freeze them and then TOAST each individual waffle. No additives, no preservatives, and very inexpensive.  





Voila! It worked.  

Crisp, delicious, home made waffles made from scratch and always ready.

  1. Gina, your delicious looking waffles and discovery of how to preserved their crispness has brought back some childhood memories. My Mom would make waffles in an electric appliance that produced four square waffles at a time. There were six of us around the table, and so we all sort of had our turn in receiving freshly made waffles, ready for butter and maple syrup. As you can imagine, Mom's waffles always came last.

    If there were any leftovers, we would reheat them later on in the oven.

    1. That is a lovely story Frances. We had a similar tradition at our house. When my mother prepared potato pancakes. My mother would insist that her pancakes should be eaten while hot and right out of the frying pan. She was always last.

  2. Thank you for the tip and great recipe too! We love waffles specially now that we have the grands here spending a couple or more weeks with us.
    I don't ever remember not having a waffle machine when I was a kid in the 50's, never mind now with our kids and grandkids... it's always a must. Love your photos Frances.

    1. Hello Fabby, My heart shaped waffle iron came from a kitchen supply store. They usually have them around Valentine's day. I purchased mine a long time ago. It has served me well and children are so delighted when they see that their waffles are heart shaped.

    Your waffles look delicious with dollops of yoghurt and fresh strawberries - hard to beat!
    I must do that for my little grandies when I next see them!

  5. Waffles can be so delicious when crispy - we buy frozen ones for when grandkids are here for breakfast, and Bob will have them now and then with organic maple syrup. I try to stay away from them - but would have a hard time passing up these from your waffle iron dear!
    Love your canister set - did you paint them too? Gorgeous.

    Do you have your mother's recipe for potato latkes Gina? I bet she made wonderful ones!

    1. Dear Mary, My Mother's potato pancakes only have a few ingredients but they have always been my favorites. Peel potatoes, grate by hand. place in porous sack to drain off juices, add salt and 2 to 3 beaten eggs.
      (It's the eggs that make the difference) Add a couple of TB of flour. Melt a small amount of unsalted butter in large frying pan. Spoon 3 pancakes into pan and fry. I love them plain, my Father liked them with sugar sprinkled on top and my sister liked applesauce.
      Some people like to add green onions. I don't.
      Purchased the canister set a long time ago somewhere in Europe. The red ones are from Italy, also purchased a long time ago.

    2. Thanks so much for the recipe Gina - I will certainly try making them, I too like them without onions. In Massachusetts, my children went to a Catholic elementary school staffed by an order of Lithuanian nuns (Sisters of Jesus Crucified), and the favorite annual fund raiser, which I assisted with, was Potato Pancake Night! It was always a fun and tasty time. Lovely memories for me.

  7. That's how we do it, too. We like them so much that we got a new Breville at Christmas. I think we are due for a big batch this weekend!

    after seeing your crisp waffles this morning I regretted not having a waffle iron. But I did have strawberries and whipping cream and made a batch of crepes instead. I do think I will have to look for a waffle iron though because we love to serve something special for breakfast on the weekends.

    1. Dear Sieglinde, My waffle iron came from William Sanoma's catalog. At the time they offered the heart waffle iron only around Valentine's day. There is something special about the heart shape. It reminds me of being small and loving waffles more than anything else.
      To be honest, I love thin crepes even more now that I have grown up a bit.

  11. I have always had a waffle iron - in 42+ years of marriage I have gone through two, but I have never had a heart-shaped one. I like yours a lot! I make waffled whenever we have a brunch and my recipe uses whipped egg whites, folded into the batter at the last minute. They are delicious!

  12. Waffles are on the menu here this coming Saturday when our son and his family come for breakfast. The little ones (and bigger ones) do enjoy waffles. I pre-heat the oven and then place the waffles there, on the rack (no pan) to keep crisp. Seems to work. And my recipe is like Pondside's, with beaten egg whites folded in before cooking. Light and yummy!
    Your heart-shaped waffles would be a treat!

    1. Dear Lorrie, Thank you for your tip. You place the waffle, one at a time, on the rack? So you don't stack them. I will definitely try your recipe. That might be the answer to a crisp waffle. Thank you for the tip.

  13. I don't have a waffle maker, much less one that makes beautiful heart shaped waffles. They look delicious. I can imagine them for breakfast, with good maple syrup poured over the top. That would be a Sunday treat!
