Thank Goodness for my little Greenhouse

Over the years I have discovered that many of my garden flowers do well in my winter greenhouse. 

Early in the year I pot up a few annuals such as poppies, snapdragons, petunias, pansies and especially nasturtiums.  They bloom all Summer outside and continue blooming in my winter greenhouse.

  

My "antique" plate, painted in 2005, is still around.  Just couldn't part with it.  It has all the right flaws.  

This petunia changes yellow and red combinations, all on the same plant.  Sometimes they tend do be a solid red, then they change to a solid yellow and often they are a combination of both and in different patterns. 

When all else fails my geraniums never stop blooming.  I must take new cuttings to rejuvenate some of the more special colors.

The last one.

You say you can't grow oranges in Utah!

 I can.

 In my little greenhouse.

My Meyer orange tree is just a small one but it grew 6 large beautiful and juicy oranges.
And now it is beginning to grow new buds.

My greenhouse is heated by the sun.

It is where my geraniums wait for spring to come. 

It snowed a little last night.  Must clean off the glass panes so that the heat of the sun can be trapped inside.  

And I can grow kumquats. Do you like kumquats?

I do.  
You have to pop the entire fruit into your mouth.  

The inside is very tart but the rind is sweet and very aromatic. 

This cactus almost didn't make it.  

A tiny cactus grew at the base of a larger plant.  One of my white geese came by and pulled it off.  I found the little piece in the grass.  

I potted it up. The next day the goose had yanked it out of the pot.  Again I found it.

I replanted it and moved it to a safe place. 

That was 2 years ago.  

My geraniums are very old...I love every one of them. 

Finished a new mural and sent it off to Virginia.  

And now I'm going to eat my orange.

Spring, as usual

will be a little late around here.

There are Hellebore blooming in my garden. 

But that is all.  

But there are Cacti blooming in my greenhouse.

I didn't used to like them

I wonder if this big fellow will ever bloom and if so, what will it look like.  

If you take them out of a small pot and move them into a large container, they become giants.  

Like this one.  

It looks like every cabbage seed has germinated. 

The other side of the greenhouse holds my 20 year old geraniums.

Soon my Daffodils will bloom again.  

Then, I will celebrate Spring.

Let us out!

We are ready to be planted outside.
We are ready to dazzle.

But wait, maybe we should reconsider;

nothing but WHITE.

Hellebore don't mind.

For now we can wait inside. 

And keep "The Painter" company.

It's a Jungle in there.

In my Greenhouse.

It's too early to take the Geraniums outside.  

Nasturtiums are even more tender.  They have provided me with lots of flowers during the winter months.  Don't want to lose them now. 

New Lemons are growing on my Tree.  I hand pollinated the blossoms.  My greenhouse is filled with their intoxicating perfume.  

This petunia doesn't know what color it wants to be.

Pear blossoms are beginning to show.

My show is only 2 weeks away.  I will be painting every day.

My Winter Greenhouse is waking up

The days are getting longer.

Nasturtiums have been blooming all winter.

My old Geraniums are filling in. 

This one is an Ivy Geranium.

The older the better... gives them so much character.

Every year I plant a few Iceland Poppies into pots so that I can have early flowers. 

Young and old live happily side by side.  

Nasturtiums come in so many fabulous colors.

This one doesn't count.  It's growing on my way to the greenhouse.

I always seed a few Morning Glories in pots.   Gives them a good start. They will trail out of  urns and reach the terrace floor by mid summer. 

All of the flowers in this pot are volunteers...always a nice surprise.

It may still be cold outside

In fact, it still freezes at night. 

My humble little greenhouse will have to suffice for now.

It is heated by the sun.

It makes it possible for me to save my geraniums from one year to the next.

I can grow enough different varieties to fashion a flower bouquet whenever the mood strikes me.

Every year I add a few new varieties.

The blue cement wall absorbs the heat from the sun.

Papaver nauticale  love the cool greenhouse.

Nasturtiums planted themselves. 

Soon all plants will go outside and my greenhouse will be just another sad little place.
