It is Rolly Polly Time

Or if you are more sophisticated you might call them 

Ronde de Nice. 

The perfect Summer squash.

They are good when golf ball size or even a little larger.  

  You can almost watch them grow. 

 But first I will collect a few blossoms and fry them covered in beer batter. 

What makes Ronde de Nice so perfect is that the entire vegetable can be used.  The skin is soft and when young, seeds are not developed. 

The yellow squash in the back is also a Rolly Polly, only this one is now too old to eat but is perfect for saving seeds.

Squash bread is delicious and 

so is squash soup.

Ronde de Nice are prolific growers. Soon I will be putting them up on Main Street.

If you're lucky there may be a few waiting for you.

Good Grief, I just noticed.

My chickens are reaching through the fence. 

Aha, I caught you.  No use looking so innocent now. 

They are eating my new Sweet Pea Shoots.

No use denying it.  I've seen you do it. 

A summer without Sweet Peas? 

Now listen here girls, I'm watching you. 

 If it hairlips a hog, I will have Sweet Peas this year.  

One of every color in the rainbow. 

And one more thing. 

The Ronde de Nice seeds I saved from last year's crop did not look promising.

  

But now I see that I will have enough of these delectable little squash to share with the entire town. 

(They may show up on your doorstep).

You can take THAT to the bank.

That's what happens when you live in a small community.

You share.

It has become tradition. 

Mr G fills the truck with our home grown Lakota and Hubbard Squash and drives them to our local bank.

 Everyone at the bank gets to pick their favorites.  

The red are Lakota Squash...my favorite. 

The green are Hubbards.

 Because we save the seeds from year to year we can see an evolution of new color combinations. 
 The bees are to blame.

 You have heard of Mutation.  Without mutation life can not continue.  

We have no idea what kind of squash this is (maybe you do).  Two of them showed up in our squash patch for the first time this year.  

We have not introduced any new seeds into our field.  

Have we come up with a new variety?  

Can't wait to see how they taste.  

Make every moment count.  
Life is short, eat dessert first.
